In Pride and Prejudice (New Delhi: Popular Illustrated Classics, 2004) Jane Austen portrays life in the rural society of the day. The setting and the social classes of the character very clear portrayed in this novel. In my opinion, Pride and Prejudice deal with love, comedy, and first impression. The story begins when Mrs. Bennet who has five young daughters, applies to her husband to go immediately to Netherfield to make a formal introduction of the family. His husband refused but finally they go. Mr. Bingley, who is a single man of large fortune [p.3], makes a ball and the Bennets invited to come to the ball. In that ball, Elizabeth Bennet, who is the second daughter of Mrs. Bennet meet Mr. Darcy, who is the best friend of Mr. Darcy, for the first time. Initially, the relationship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy is usual, but they fallen in love and finally they married. Actually, Mr. Darcy, 28, is a kind man for the people who know him well and he is a pride man for the people who do not know him well too.
Mr. Darcy, who is aristocrat in Pemberley, has income ten thousand a year. He also owns a house in London. His description is tall person, handsome features and noble mien. “Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien; and the report which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance, of his having ten thousand a year.”[p.9]
As the protagonist man, Fitzwilliam Darcy is a handsome, young, intelligent and rich person. However, Fitzwilliam Darcy, who is the master and the nephew of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, is a pride, selfish and not convivial person too,
“She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humor at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time with me”. [Chapter 2]
This quote tells us how selfish Darcy is, he trifling Ms. Bennet at that time. He realizes his wealth and his class, high social class which makes him pride and selfish. And for the first time, Elizabeth Bennet argued that he is very bad person, she doesn’t like him.
According to Elizabeth, Darcy does not have well-manner when he proposed her for the first time and she refused his proposed. The refusal of Elizabeth allows him to see her and himself in a new light. He rejects the hypocritical views of his family and society. He realizes that he could never be happy in a match not born out of love, in a marriage to a woman equal in position and wealth but not in understanding and temperament.
As I said before, Darcy is the kind person for people who know him well her sister s, Georgiana Darcy, said that he is good brother because his care to her. His friend argued that he is a good friend too, he is helpfully and generous person. In this novel Darcy become a protagonist man because his good attitudes for his friend. He paid the marriage of Elizabeth’s sister, Lydia and Wickham.
According to Mrs. Reynolds, his housekeeper, he is the best master and landlord. His sister Georgiana’s respect for him almost overcomes her affection. He takes good care of her as her guardian, buys her things that might bring her pleasure (a new piano, a newly refurnished sitting room), but she doesn’t cease to be intimidated by him. [Chapter 43]
At the end of the novel, he changes his behavior to the Bennets Family. He admits his bad behavior too to Elizabeth. And then, they married.
Mr. Darcy is a generous person because he changes his bad perception. He becomes a good person for people who know him. How beautiful he is.
