The National Awakening Party (PKB) rejected unlawful smoking fatwa of the Committee of Tarjih PP Muhammadiyah. PKB argued that the punishment of smoking is makruh that is the avoidance of which yields merit but the performance of which is not sinful.
Through message for metrotvnews.com, the chairman of PKB fraction Marwan Ja’far said that the opinion of Moslem religious teacher is different. Some of them said that it is makruh, unlawful, even neutral (we can do it and is not sinful). However, PKB agreed with the opinion which was said that smoking is makruh. Since, PKB valued that smoking kemakruhan (the avoidance of which yields merit but the performance of which is not sinful) was a moderate view.
“The opinion of unlawful was not also the opinion of Moslem religious teacher. That unlawful fatwa is not Muhammadiyah internal business, we did not want to intervene,” Marwan said. Anymore, Marwan continued that smokings can dangerous health. However, if cigarette companies are closed, the impact of social and economy is also big.
“Tobacco farmer also lose out and tax for country will decrease. Because of that, we will give to people to value it,” Marwan said.
